Literature Review Process
During the process of the literature review, I gained crucial new information that added to my research. The readings off BTI online and some self chosen, added to my knowledge of how we can use meaningful praise in the classroom and why its crucial to students learning.
Enriched/challenged my faith, spirituality or beliefs: Throughout the process of completing the readings for the literature review, my main focus was on the reason I am completing this research- to serve God through my teaching. In order for me to be the best teacher I can be, I need to look into the meaningless praise I give and find ways I can give intentional praise to best serve my students. My beliefs were challenged because I was thinking of praise from a selfish perspective- that it would help form relationships with the children and motivate them to learn more. However after I completed my research I can now see the praise needs to benefit the students learning so they can see they are meeting the learning intentions and are capable of completing more challenging tasks.
Influenced your intended future practice as a teacher who is professional; especially when faced with either an unknown situation, or challenge: The goal to be a professional teacher is something I strive to and I believe giving intentional praise falls into the category of being a professional. I need to be giving feedback that is going to help students see what they need to do to meet the success criteria. This will help in assessment and students confidence. It can be challenging to find intentional feedback and is sometimes easier to give generic feedback like 'well done' or 'good work'. This is a trap a lot of teachers fall into. Giving intentional feedback to benefit students learning is challenging but as professional teachers who are focused on the growth and development of students, it is crucial.
Challenged your self-management of time, processes and learning: Writing this literature review was both time consuming and a long process, because it was challenging to put the new information I learned into a literature review. I struggled to balance practicum and writing this report. However by spreading the work out across numerous nights I managed to complete the assignment and serve my students on practicum well. As a teacher time is precious and I know I will need to be very aware of how and where I am spending my time. I find prioritising tasks helpful because its important to get what needs to be done, completed first. Its also important to schedule in breaks and time for myself, this is what keeps me working hard. It was a wonderful opportunity to be on practicum while writing this report because I had a practical example to work with every day, and I could put my new learning into action in the classroom.
Comment on conversations and engagement with your research supervisor and critical friend during semester one.
Meeting with Marion in semester one was very helpful. Not only did I receive help with writing my findings and analysis, but I also had help in sourcing the readings best suited to my research question. Due to tragic circumstances my critical friend had a lot of time off while I was working on my report, therefore I didn't receive feedback from her. However I did work with a few of my peers and we kept each other motivated and on track. I can see the benefit of working with a buddy and meeting with a mentor during the process, in future I would utilise this more.
