Practicum 4 Reflection
1. To be intentional in my planning:
This was a goal I was very determined to meet during this practicum and I'm extremely happy to say that I did. I took time to assess my students needs and to plan lessons that were beneficial for students learning. After some guidance I came up with success criteria that was achievable and related to the AO's and LI's. I'm learning to become intentional in everything I do as a teacher by having reasons behind why I do what I do.
2. Ask open ended, deeper understanding questions:
I chose this goal because questioning is something I struggle with. I tend to teach the answers rather than letting the students ponder the question. During my last two weeks of the practicum I started to work toward this goal by giving students more wait time after asking a question and encouraging students to find answers from a peer or another source. I feel like I have made a positive start to this goal, but I still have a way to go.
3. Commit to knowing my students on a deeper level, and therefore differentiate their learning:
From this first day of practicum 4, I set out to meet this goal. I formed fast relationships with my students and got to know where they were at academically (through testing and assessing work). This meant that the last two weeks I could differentiate learning based on my individual students needs. I feel I am well on my way to differentiating learning based on assessment and given more time with the students I could have had further practice in this are.
Feedforward to next practicum:
I will continue to work on the above goals for my next practicum, especially differentiating learning based on students ability and needs.
Based on feedback from my associate teacher and visiting tutor the areas to focus on for next practicum are:
- Using the anecdotal records I take to form relationships with students and extend their learning.
- Work on time management, especially in writing. Ensure the modelling time is only 1/3 of the lesson.
- Keeping individual progress records for students.
- Making specific learning focused comments in my reflections.
